The Stump

I grow from a thick stump,

gnarly, knotted.

I follow the Japanese concept

and stretch

downwards – rooting

upwards – branching.

But there are no flowers,

no lush green leaves,

just murky muddiness

plastered on me.

The soil beneath me

wants me to cave in,

become one with

the exoskeletons that it hides.

The air above me

wishes for me to

succumb to the calling

of the wild wind.

It’s a hard choice.
